How to fix out-of-sync subtitles

Use this workflow when subtitles are ahead of audio, behind speech, or generally out of sync during playback.

The first job is not to type random millisecond values. The first job is to decide which kind of sync problem you actually have, because the fix for a constant offset is different from drift or a timeline cut.

If every subtitle is early or late by about the same amount, measure that offset and use Fix Out-of-Sync Subtitles or the Subtitle Delay Fixer to shift the whole file.

Step 1: identify the sync problem type

Out-of-sync subtitles usually fall into one of three buckets:

A constant offset

Every subtitle is off by about the same amount from beginning to end.

Examples:

• every cue appears about 1.2 seconds late
• every cue appears about 800 milliseconds early
• the whole subtitle file matches once you shift the entire timeline

Progressive drift

The file starts close to correct timing, but the mismatch grows as the video plays.

Examples:

• the first minute looks fine, but the last minute is several seconds off
• the subtitles get slowly earlier or later instead of staying evenly offset
• the video and subtitle file are different lengths or frame rates

One broken section

The beginning is fine, then sync breaks after a cut, ad break removal, scene trim, or timeline edit.

Examples:

• subtitles are correct until one cut point, then everything after that point is late
• a trailer intro was removed, so only the later section is wrong
• one section of a merged subtitle file needs separate repair

Use a partial-shift workflow instead of moving the whole file.

Step 2: measure the offset

For a constant offset problem, pause on one clear spoken line and compare:

• when the person actually starts speaking
• when the subtitle appears

Then convert that difference into milliseconds.

Examples:

• subtitles are 1.2 seconds late -> shift by -1200 ms
• subtitles are 0.8 seconds early -> shift by 800 ms
• subtitles are 2.5 seconds behind speech -> shift by -2500 ms

After that first estimate, check one cue near the middle and one near the end. If all three points are wrong by about the same amount, you have a constant offset.

When the whole file is early or late

Step 4: test the corrected file

After shifting the subtitles, test three points:

1. the beginning
2. the middle
3. the end

If all three are close, the fix worked.

Common causes of out-of-sync subtitles

• the intro was trimmed after subtitle export
• the subtitle file came from a different release or rip

If the error gets worse over time, shifting the whole file by one number will only make one section look correct.

Testing only the first cue

Always verify the middle and end. A file can look fixed at the start and still be wrong later.

Using the wrong sign for the shift

Fixing timing before checking the source file
